ABSTRACT

Since the Compton camera was fi rst introduced, various types of conical Radon transforms have been examined. Here, we derive the inversion formula for the conical Radon transform, where the cone of integration moves along a curve in three-dimensional space such as a helix. Along this three-dimensional curve, a detailed inversion formula for helical movement will be treated for Compton imaging in this paper. The inversion formula includes Hilbert transform and Radon transform. For the inversion of Compton imaging with helical movement, it is necessary to invert Hilbert transform with respect to the inner product between the vertex and the central axis of the cone of the Compton camera. However, the inner product function is not monotone. Thus, we should replace the Hilbert transform by the Riemann–Stieltjes integral over a certain monotone function related with the inner product function. We represent the Riemann–Stieltjes integral as a conventional Riemann integral over a countable union of disjoint intervals, whose end points can be computed using the Newton method. For the inversion of Radon transform, three dimensional fi ltered backprojection is used. For the numerical implementation, we analytically compute the Hilbert transform and Radon transform of the characteristic function of fi nite balls. Numerical test is given, when the density function is given by a characteristic function of a ball or three overlapping balls.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The relationship between maxillary lateral incisor anodontia and the palatal displacement of unerupted maxillary canines cannot be considered as a multiple tooth abnormality with defined genetic etiology in order to be regarded as a "syndrome". Neither were the involved genes identified and located in the human genome, nor was it presumed on which chromosome the responsible gene would be located. The palatal maxillary canine displacement in cases of partial anodontia of the maxillary lateral incisor is potentially associated with environmental changes caused by its absence in its place of formation and eruption, which would characterize an epigenetic etiology. The lack of the maxillary lateral incisor in the canine region means removing one of the reference guides for the eruptive trajectory of the maxillary canine, which would therefore, not erupt and /or impact on the palate. Consequently, and in sequence, it would lead to malocclusion, maxillary atresia, transposition, prolonged retention of the deciduous canine and resorption in the neighboring teeth. Thus, we can say that we are dealing with a set of anomalies and multiple sequential changes known as sequential development anomalies or, simply, sequence. Once the epigenetics and sequential condition is accepted for this clinical picture, it could be called "Maxillary Lateral Incisor Partial Anodontia Sequence."

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effect of the transcranial magnetic stimulation on upper-extremity function rehabilitation and changes in the excitability of cerebral cortex, and to evaluate from the viewpoint of electro-physiology the prognosis so as to guide the rehabilitation treatment of patients after stroke. Methods Forty-six patients in the early stage after a stroke were given TMS examinations of the ipsilateral brain region. Those with the motor evoked potentials (MEPs) amplitudes lower than 50 μV were classified into a motion-induced experimental negative group (the negative group),whiie those whose MEP amplitude reached 50 μV or more were classified as movement-induced positive (the positive group). Both groups were given the same treatment. Before and after 2,4 and 8 weeks of treatment the Fugl-Meyer movement function rating scale was used to assess their bilateral upper limb movement function.TMS technology was used to detect any change in the resting motor threshold (RMT) and the amplitude (Amp) of MEPs in the motor cortex. The incubation period of the cortex (CL) and the central motor conduction time (CMCT) in the contralateral motor cerebral cortex were also observed. Results After 4 weeks of treatment, the average score of the positive group on Fugl-Meyer upper movement function rating scale reached (54.99±2.76),significantly higher than before treatment and significantly higher than the negative group's average (P<0.05).After 8 weeks of treatment, the average score in the positive group had increased further to 73.11±2.98,still significantly higher than that of the negative group (P<0.01).After treatment,RMT decreased progressively in both groups, but that of the negative group dropped from (98.35±10.12) to (30.35±7.31) (9<0.01),with significantly greater decline in amplitude and rate than that of the positive group (P<0.05).After treatment, the Amp of both groups showed a gradual increasing trend.Amp increased earlier in the positive group, but there was no significant difference in the extent of the increase between the two groups (P>0.05).After the treatment the CL and CMCT had shortened significantly in the negative group compared to before the treatment (P<0.05),while there was no significant change in CL and CMCT after the treatment (P>0.05).Conclusions The excitability of the contralateral motor cortex changes after a stroke.TMS can be used to characterize the MEP to monitor and predict recovery. This should help clinicians prepare more scientific rehabilitation plans.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The objective of this retrospective study was to show results from platform-switched narrow-diameter implants in the posterior edentulous region, which we followed up for more than 1 year after functional loading. METHODS: Ninety-eight narrow implants were inserted into 66 patients. After healing, fixed implant-supported prostheses were delivered to the patients, and Periotest and radiographic examinations were performed. After the first year of loading, the implant outcome was again evaluated clinically and radiographically using the Periotest analysis. Crestal bone loss and Periotest values (PTVs) were used to evaluate the effect of surgery, prosthesis, implant, and a host-related factor. A general linear model was used to statistically detect variables statistically associated with crestal bone loss and Periotest value. RESULTS: We followed up on the implants over 1 to 4 years after loading; their survival rate was 100%, and pronounced differences from PTVs were noted among jaw location, bone quality, and loading period. No difference was detected in bone loss among the variables studied. Bone loss after functional loading was 0.14 ± 0.39 mm. The stability value from the Periotest was −3.29 ± 0.50. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, judicious use of platform-switched narrow implants with a conical connection must be considered an alternative for wide-diameter implants to restore a posterior edentulous region.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Mastopexy surgery associated with breast augmentation is increasingly being requested. At the same time, patients with lower degrees of ptosis are less receptive to any correction through vertical scars. In this context, periareolar (circumareolar) mastopexy with a conical implant is an option that results in a scar that is limited to the areolar perimeter, and enables the treatment of changes in the position and size of the nipple-areola complex. METHOD: We evaluated 22 patients submitted to periareolar mastopexy with use of conical prostheses coated with polyurethane and placed in a subglandular position. All patients were operated on by the same surgeon. RESULTS: Among the patients, 45% presented with grade I ptosis, 32% grade II, and 23% grade III, and 86% exhibited asymmetry of the nipple-areola complex, 27% lateralization, and 18% large areolas, with some combination in the same patient. The volume of the prostheses ranged from 215 to 380 mL. There were two cases of scar enlargement; however, there were no cases of enlargement of the areola or hypertrophic scar. During the period studied, there were no complications related to the placement of the implant. In the satisfaction questionnaire, most of the patients considered the aspect of the breast to be natural in appearance, giving good grades to the size, symmetry, and height of the breasts; the quality of the scar; and the position, shape, and size of the areolas. CONCLUSIONS: This technique produces satisfactory results in cases of mild to moderate ptoses, large areolas, lateralization, and asymmetry of the nipple-areola complex. Important technical aspects include the conservative removal of periareolar skin, use of implants of moderate sizes, and the use of the round-block containment suture.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: to describe the characteristics and use of the conic corneal trephination. Methods: an experimental study was performed in Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology from January to December 2010. Ten eyeballs not useful for transplantation underwent trephination, with a corneal vacuum trephine particularly designed to create an oblique corneal cut. The cutting length, the corneal thickness, the external diameter of the disc, the internal diameter of the disc and the cutting angle were the analyzed parameters. Descriptive statistics were applied to show the results. Results: the mean cutting length was 1776.7 ± 273.7 mm and the mean corneal thickness at the cutting point was 850.0 ± 119.2 mm , being the difference between them equals to 926 mm. The mean external diameter was 7.6 ± 0.2 mm and the internal diameter was 8.5 ± 0.4 mm, with a difference of 0.9 mm. The mean cutting angle amounted to 28.4 ± 2.1°. A formula was developed to calculate the cutting length or depth based on the mean pachymetry of the circle where the trephination is performed for a determined cutting angle. Conclusions: aregular symmetric cut was obtained, longer than the corneal thickness with the planned conic profile. Such cutting pattern provides a larger contact surface and self-sealing tendency

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiological results of cementless total hip arthroplasty using a conical stem. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From June 2005 to December 2007, total hip arthroplasty using the conical stem was performed in 47 patients and 51 hips. The most common causes for total hip arthroplaty were osteonecrosis of the femoral head in 32 cases. The mean follow-up period was 74.3 months (range: 62-93 months) and the mean age was 51.2 years (range: 36-84 years). The clinical evaluation included the Harris hip score, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score, and pain on the inguinal area or thigh. Radiographic evaluation was performed for determination of the fixation status of the implant, the radiolucent line, subsidence, loosening and heterotopic ossification around the acetabular cup and the femoral stem. RESULTS: At the most recent follow-up, the mean Harris hip score was 94.1 points and the WOMAC score was 11.3 points. Radiologically, bone ongrowth was seen in all cases without migration of acetabular cup, femoral stem, changing of the position, subsidence and loosening. Complications included two cases of posterior dislocation, one case of heterotopic ossification, and one case of deep vein thrombosis. CONCLUSION: Cementless total hip arthroplasty using the conical femoral stem shows good clinical and radiologic results in treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head with normal canal flare index and femur neck fracture with stove pipe type.

ABSTRACT

The ultimate goal of tissue engineering is to design and fabricate functional human tissues that are similar to natural cells and are capable of regeneration. Preparation of cell aggregates is one of the important steps in 3D tissue engineering technology, particularly in organ printing. Two simple methods, hanging drop (HD) and conical tube (CT) were utilized to prepare cell aggregates. The size and viability of the aggregates obtained at different initial cell densities and pre-culture duration were compared. The proliferative ability of the cell aggregates and their ability to spread in culture plates were also investigated. In both methods, the optimum average size of the aggregates was less than 500 µm. CT aggregates were smaller than HD aggregates. 5,000 cells per drop HD aggregates showed a marked ability to attach and spread on the culture surface. The proliferative ability reduced when the initial cell density was increased. Comparing these methods, we found that the HD method having better size controlling ability as well as enhanced ability to maintain higher rates of viability, spreading, and proliferation. In conclusion, smaller HD aggregates might be a suitable choice as building blocks for making bioink particles in bioprinting technique.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The change of the marginal bone around dental implants have significance not only for the functional maintenance but also for the esthetic success of the implant. The purpose of this study was to investigate the load transfer of internal conical joint type implant according to marginal bone resorption by using the three-dimensional finite element analysis model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The internal conical joint type system was selected as an experimental model. Finite element models of bone/implant/prosthesis complex were constructed. A load of 300 N was applied vertically beside 3 mm of implant axis. RESULTS: The pattern of stress distribution according to marginal bone resorption was similar. The maximum equivalent stress of implant was increase according to marginal bone resorption and the largest maximum equivalent stress was shown at model of 1 mm marginal bone resorption. Although marginal bone loss more than 1mm was occurred increasing of stress, the width of the stress increase was decreasing. CONCLUSION: According to these results, the exposure of thin neck portion of internal conical joint type implant is most important factor in stress increasing.

ABSTRACT

The use of cotton plug as closure of a bacterial culture flask had been reported to have many disadvantages such as inhibitory nature of cotton to certain microbes, chances of contamination during handling and accumulation of used cotton as biological waste. To overcome the disadvantages of cotton plugs, we have developed a new method of capping bacterial culture flasks. In the present study, three sets of experiments were conducted, one was to find out the efficiency of bacterial growth in culture flasks closed by either glass caps or cotton plugs and the second set was to find out the chances of getting contamination of sterile broth closed by either glass caps or cotton plugs and the third set was to find out the evaporation of water in conical flasks closed by glass caps or cotton plug. The results showed that the bacterial cultures closed by glass caps showed better growth with less chance of contamination and evaporation of the culture media. By this method, the bacterial culture work is made very simpler than using cotton plug.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The performance and maintenance of implant-supported prostheses are primarily dependent upon load transmission both at the bone-to-implant interface and within the implant-abutment-prosthesis complex. The design of the interface between components has been shown to have a profound influence on the stability of screw joints. PURPOSE. The Purpose of this study was to compare the strength and the fatigue resistance of 1-piece and 2-piece abutment connected to oral implant, utilizing an internal conical interface. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty Implatium(R) tapered implants were embedded to the top of the fixture in acrylic resin blocks. Ten Combi(R)(1-piece) and Dual(R)(2-piece) abutments of the same dimension were assembled to the implants, respectively. The assembled units were mounted in a testing machine. A load was applied perpendicular to the long axis of the assemblies and the loading points was at the distance of 7mm from the block surface. Half of 1-piece and 2-piece abutment-implant units were tested for the evaluation of the bending strength, and the others were cyclically loaded for the evaluation of the fatigue resistance until plastic deformation occurred. Nonparametric statistical analysis was performed for the results. RESULTS: Mean plastic and maximum bending moment were 1,900+/-18Nmm, 3,609+/-106Nmm for the 1-piece abutment, and 1,250+/-31Nmm, 2,688+/-166Nmm for the 2-piece abutment, respectively. Mean cycles and standard deviation when implant-abutment joint showed a first plastic deformation were 238,610+/-44,891. cycles for the 1-piece abutment and 9,476+/-3,541 cycles for the 2-piece abutment. A 1-piece abutment showed significantly higher value than a 2-piece abutment in the first plastic bending moment (P<.05), maximum bending moment (P<.05) and fatigue strength (P<.05). CONCLUSION: Both 1-piece and 2-piece conical abutment had high strength and fatigue resistance and this suggests long-term durability without mechanical complication. However, the 1-piece conical abutment was more stable than the 2-piece conical abutment in the strength and the fatique resistance.

ABSTRACT

Conical crown-retained denture (CCRD) has been used as a very effective treatment method in cases with few remaining teeth with heterogeneous prognosis. However, in spite of many advantages of CCRD, high technical failure rate was a problem to be considered. Incorrect path of insertion and excessive retention were thought to be the main cause of technical failure and to result from laboratory procedure with a coping misfit and/or a coping transfer error. In order to prevent this error, secure anchoring of inner coping and re-examination and milling of convergence angle were recommended on the master model from pick-up impression.

ABSTRACT

Intracavitary brachytherapy combined hypertermin for utero-cervical cancer seems to be a promising method for salvage treatments in persistent tumors and inoperable or previously irradiated cervical recurrences. In order to heat the vaginal apex and uterus, powerfull conical antennas which are suitable for afterloading cervical applicator have been designed for use in conjuction with intracavitary radition therapy. The antennas were constructed with conical conductive material to feed line and the effective length were designed proportional to microwave length, Power deposition profiles of 2450 MHz of conical antennas were studied in both phantom models and muscle tissue and compared to those of commonly used dipole antenna. Improvement of the heating pattern was found in both phantom and muscle tissue. The heating pattern produced by the conical antenna resembles an ellipsoid and then the temperature distribution in depth was extended to 2~3cm from the effective antenna axis.
